IRIS is going MOBILE! Help us build our first Mobile Classroom
We are opening Inspired Roots Independent School (IRIS) . The school primarily serves low-income newcomers (recently arrived refugees and immigrants). We need a mobile classroom/school bus so we can transport our students to and from school, and also bring them to learning opportunities throughout the community. With the help of engineering students from UC San Diego and community artists and designers, we have the plans and vision to create a unique vehicle that serves both transportation and learning functions. With your help, we will turn the plan and vision into an amazing classroom on wheels.
HELP CREATE A WORLD OF LEARNING BY SUPPORTING OUR MOBILE CLASSROOM.
Francois arrived from a refugee camp in Tanzania 6 years ago. He spoke no English and had little formal schooling. Thanks to his hard work and a specialized program for newly arrived students, Francois graduated from high school in May 2019. The Teaching and Learning Collaborative, Inc. is a non-profit dedicated to serving students like Francois and supporting teachers who are prepared to provide the high-quality, innovative education that students like Francois need and deserve.
This is a project of the Teaching and Learning Collaborative.
Our mobile classroom aims to provide underserved children in City Heights with accessible transportation and education. Immigrants represent 34% of the population, and 18.7% of residents have limited knowledge of English [5.2]. Factoring in cultural differences and a high population density, the number of opportunities available to residents is small. In a community where the largest age group is 5-10 year olds, ensuring that these children are given the necessary resources to learn could significantly contribute to future success [5.2] [5.3]. Our solution enables them to travel around their community and experience different environments while learning necessary skills and information. The mobile classroom will be a stripped school bus equipped with modern classroom equipment and furniture designed to facilitate different study modes.
